I was reading a post from Tamar Weinberg’s blog on the 11 Characteristics of Highly Influential Blog(ger)s. Tamar is a social media consultant and currently the community and marketing manager at Mashable. From Tamar’s experience, she lists 11 characteristics that made many blogs fame and fortune. Who wouldn’t want that for their blogs right? Here’s an excerpt of my favorite characteristic from her post:
“Blogging numerous times daily isn’t necessarily a necessity for blogs just starting out, nor is it feasible for most blogs, especially those who don’t blog for a living but for a hobby. Bloggers like Valeria Maltoni of Conversation Agent, who don’t have a team of bloggers at arm’s length, offer content on a very regular basis (in Valeria’s case, 6 days a week). You don’t necessarily have to pump out content hourly or even every day, but if you want to be a successful blogger, you should try to stick to some sort of schedule. If your readers are expecting content from you weekly, you should deliver weekly content. If your readers expect content from you daily, skipping a day might cause worry or the decision to unsubscribe because neglected content may inadvertently translate to neglecting your readers too.”
Don’t think that every blog must have these characteristics to become successful. If you ask 10 different people what makes a successful blog, you’ll get 10 different answers. As long as you feel comfortable in your niche and enjoy blogging, everything basically falls into place in my opinion. If I was going to some list my top 3 characteristics from Tamar’s post based on my experience as a blogger so far, it would be:
- Passion- Let’s face it. If you’re not passionate about something, then why build a blog around it and force yourself to keep that blog updated? I know many people online will get that email or land on a page stating how they can make tons of money by blogging, etc. While many of these statements online are true, they fail to tell you that it takes hard work and dedication. There are also sites out there that all talk and just want to make a quick buck off you.
- Consistency – There are many positives about being consistent. You’re indirectly telling your readers that your blog is constantly being updated with content. Also, every new post that you create is another page for the search engines to index. If you average about 2 posts a day, that’s 730 posts a year!
- Networked – The saying, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” also applies in the blogosphere. I’ve met and networked with great bloggers already and although my blog is still in it’s early stages, I’m learning just by talking to others. Best way start networking with other bloggers is to be active on their site by commenting and maybe write a guest post.

I would agree with your three on this one Jack! Consistency is definitely a key if you want to be highly influential. I have seen a lot of bloggers that I would consider to be of a really high caliber really drop their posting frequency to almost once a month – and I rarely hear them talked about any more.

Passion is definitely what’s most important. So many of my friends have tried to make popular blogs but quit simply because they didn’t have enough passion for the topic they were blogging.
You have to think of blogging first as an enjoyable activity, and second as something to be made popular and profitable.
