Social bookmarking sites are a good way to get one way backlinks and gain popularity on the major search engines. Over time, you can get hundreds of links pointing back to your site, but you must know which sites are do-follow. Do-follow sites basically mean that they give link love on their site by allowing the search engines to index your bookmark link, allowing it to be a credited backlink. Don’t rule out the no-follow bookmarking sites just yet! If you have a well-written article with a no-follow link back to your site, many bloggers will reference your blog post to their readers.
Social Bookmarking The Right Way
A word of caution before you go bookmarking happy. Many sites will ban your account and website if you’re just spamming their sites with links. Here are some tips to bookmark responsibly and effectively:
- Don’t Just Bookmark Your Own Sites – Only bookmarking your site sends a red flag to your account that you’re just trying to get backlinks, and you’re not adding value to the social community with your links.
- Be An Active Member – You should actively vote and comment on other users submissions, in every category, every day! You’ll build relationships with other people and they’ll start to vote your links up as well.
- Similarity – Before submitting your links, study the site and see what type of links are submitted that are popular. Are these links humorous or political? Adjust your writing style based on what’s working.
- Full Profile – When creating an account to these sites, it’s important to fill your profile out as much as possible. Upload your pic, fill up the “About Me” page, be as humanly as possible to gain the trust of others.
The 20 Do-Follow Social Bookmarking Sites
I found a great post by Caroline Middlebrook titled 20 Do-Follow Social Bookmarking Sites That Actually Work (and how to bookmark QUICKLY). This post is very detailed and not only shows you a list of these do-follow social bookmarking sites, but Caroline takes it a step further and gives you programs that will allow you to automatically submit your links as well. Here’s an excerpt from her post:
“Every time you add a bookmark to one of your pages in one of these sites you create a backlink. If you bookmark every piece of content you create in all of these sites you can build a lot of backlinks over time. For the purposes of backlinks, you want to make sure that the bookmarking sites provide a real, do-follow link. This rules out the biggest of the bunch – Delicious as it is no-follow. I found lots of big no-follow sites and I also found several that don’t provide real backlinks – they use their own form of dynamic link which does not count as a backlink.
One other thing to be aware of is that even though these are your personal bookmarks, you need to ensure that they are public – that way other people (Google really) can find them. But be careful, some bookmarking sites such as Connotea have a specific niche and probably wont appreciate your toenail clipping bookmarks.”
Read Caroline’s post and remember to bookmark the right way, because you’re just wasting your time if you’re spamming your links out.

I wouldn’t post on all of them right away. Look at some of those sites, create your profile, and build relationships with other users first.

There are many factors involved if you are doing social bookmarking.
For example many social bookmarking websites accept comma separated tags and few of them required space separated.
So if you want to get the maximum benefit than you will have to apply these while doing social bookmarking.
