I saw this interesting poll from this article: Poll – Do you moderate blog comments?. Here were the current results from Denise’s poll:
- 96 total votes
- 18% (17 votes) said they do not moderate comments
- 79% (76 votes) said they do moderate comments
- 3% (3 votes) have no idea what the heck we’re talking about
So what does this tell you? Roughly for every 100 blogs online, 17-18 blogs are filled with spammy comments. Not a good look for people blogging and super annoying for the rest of us. Now you can do it manually if you only have a small handful of comments to go through, but what do you do when you have hundreds of comments daily?
Here are 7 plugins you can use for your WordPress blog to prevent spam comments from ruining your day:
- SI Captcha Anti Spam - Here’s a quick and simple way to prevent spammers from wasting your time by having commentators fill in a random phrase before logging on and/or submitting their comments.
- YaCaptcha – Another captcha plugin with a different look for the phrase box, yet just as effective.
- Geo Captcha – If you don’t want annoy your readers with typing a cumbersome captcha phrase, this unique plugin blocks spammers based on their IP address and country. If the country is not in the white list of the GEO-IP-Library, then that person has to enter a captcha.
- Invisible Defender - This plugin doesn’t just have a cool name, it also protects your blog from spam bots by adding two additional fields hidden by CSS.

I am still just using Askimet. I find that I get really annoyed with Captcha codes. Some are really hard to read and some blogs have it set up wrong and it just always tells you that you are wrong.

I’m using that also Tom, but for some reason it always throws your comments under spam and I always have to marked them as “not spam”. Has anyone mentioned this to you before?

Yea a couple of people have told me, but I thought that was only because I was useing the ‘Free Squeeze Pages’ and my keywordluv link. I have had quite a few of my regular bloggers pop up in my spam as well. Are you looking at changing? If so what too?

Yeah I might change to something else, I know there are better ones out there. Need to do a little research first. Once I test a few out I will definitely let you know.

Hi Tom – I just found a plugin called “WP-spamfree”. Looks VERY Robust and looks like your readers don’t need to fill a captcha, its optional. Just do a search in your plugins directory with that name. I just grabbed it today, we’ll see how good it works.

Interesting plugins you got there. The Invisible Defender one seems like it may work wonders. What would be a sneaky idea is to name the field ids something else, rather than the obvious and definitely not the default that any blog platform uses. That way automated programs won’t know what fields to fill with what information.
Some of the plugins may do this already.. Just my thought.

Great insight there Josiah. What it comes down to in a plugin is if you like how it looks on your blog, and more importantly, how it functions.

I still use Akismet, but unfortunately it gets around 1,000 spam comments a day (heh…) which means I don’t have the time to go through them and rescue anyone. Thankfully most legit comments seem to be showing up, and haven’t had anyone contact me to say they were spammed, but if I find something better I’ll look at implementing it.

Wow 1,000 spam comments a day? I can’t even imagine having to go through that many comments. I guess it’s a good problem to have if most of them are legit

I think i will install the SI Captcha Anti Spam. What about the akismet of wordpress?

You can always deactivate it for now. See how SI Captcha works compared to akismet. I personally keep Askimet on and just uploaded WP-spamfree. Far less spam has gone through for me!
