7 Harsh Realities Of SEO

Found a great post from Neil Patel on the The 7 Harsh Realities of SEO that I thought would be great to share with you guys.  There are many SEO “experts” out there that claim they’ll take your rankings to the moon, so this list from Neil is needed to bring everyone back to earth and realize that SEO fundatmentals are still the best tactics.  Here’s an excerpt of my favorite harsh reality:

Harsh Reality #1: Links are everything

There are two major aspects of SEO. The first is on-page optimization and the second is the number of sites linking to you. On-page optimization is something that every one can easily manipulate, but links on the other hand aren’t.

Search engines look at:

  • The number of sites linking to yours – typically the more sites linking to your website, the better.
  • The anchor text of these links – if you are trying to get ranked for “dog food” it’s more advantageous if the link that points to your website says “dog food” instead of your website name.
  • How relevant are your links – if your website is about dog food then you want either dog or pet related sites to link to you.

The three things I mentioned above make up an ideal link and because it’s hard to get ideal links, search engines place more emphasis on them than anything else.

Don’t let anyone tell you there’s a new way to get your rankings up in the search engines, because they’re out trying to make a quick buck.

Yes, Neil does a good job of dispelling many myths and providing some great simple advice at the same time. He’s a pretty cool guy in person too – I met him at Elite Retreat in October.

Links have always been everything, but the way to gain them is changing – link building must now be exponential in order to get far with competitive phrases, and this means having demonstrable value in your onsite content and going the extra mile to get links naturally.

Right Richard, focus on building links with long tail keywords and you’ll get to the top of the SERPs faster. Once you’re at the top for those lower competition keywords, you can start tackling your broader keyword terms.

I would say when it comes to SEO links are its back bone, without links there can be no SEO as links are what search engines and even people who use search engines look for.

Hi Chakkravarthi, That’s right. I can say that one of the most important on-page seo you should focus on is your title tag structure. Google weighs your title tag from strongest to weakest, going left to right. So make sure your keywords go first, than if you want, your site name goes after.
