One of the fun things we always do when starting a new WordPress blog is finding great plugins to add more features.  What many people should do before adding plugins is to change a few default settings from your dashboard.  Many of you have blogs for months or even years but still haven’t changed these default settings.

9 Default WordPress Settings You Need To Change

Here’s a post by Marko Saric titled 9 settings I always adjust as soon as I install a new WordPress blog that any new blogger should change after installing a new WordPress blog onto their host.  I’ve applied these changes to my blog and you should make these changes to your blog as well.  Here’s an excerpt from the post of two settings that affect your SEO as well as preventing hackers from getting into your site:

Change permalinks

(In Settings – Permalinks)

  • You don’t want your blog articles to be called something like:

http://www.yourdomain.com/?p=123

/%category%/%postname%/

  • By doing this my blog permalinks look like this:

http://www.howtomakemyblog.com/category/postname/

Change the admin nickname

(In Users – Your Profile)

  • You don’t want “Admin” to be the name of the author of the blog posts you write
  • Change admin nickname to your own name and have it displayed alongside each post

Please read the rest of the changes on Marko’s post because this will make a HUGE difference how the search engine will index your blog, how fast your site loads, how much more secure your blog will be.

The first thing I always do is change the permalinks. I don’t understand why Wordpress hasn’t changed the standard permalink structure by now! Thanks for the great link.

Another great tip is to create a new user with admin rights and delete the the default admin user. The problem with creating a new Wordpress blog is that it gives everyone a default username of “admin”. A hacker would already have 50% of the login info.

Yeah. Absolutely. I changed my permalink structure after I already had 200 blog posts. Luckily, there is a plugin out there that quickly set up my redirects (tho if you’re good with .htaccess, its not hard to fix the issue). Get your permalink structure down right away, and enjoy your SEO optimized URLs.

Another great post would be “9 great wordpress plugins that you should install right away”. I would recommend setting up Akismet first and getting “All in one SEO” next (along with doing things in this post).
