Do You Use These Top 3 Ways to Monetize Your Blog?

I just read a post on the Top 3 Ways To Monetize Your Blog And Explode Your Income. Whether you think they are the top 3 ways to monetize a blog is your own opinion, I still believe they’re a strong 3.  Here’s why:

  • List Building: What the author means by list building is building a mailing list so that you can email them weekly notifications on tips and strategies, product reviews, special discounts, etc.  The great thing about having a list is that these people are interested in what you have to say.  Attract new subscribers my giving away a free ebook that you created as an incentive for joining your list.  Aweber does a great job maintaining and organizing your newsletter message, etc.
  • Writing Reviews: This can be a sensitive subject because you want your readers to trust whatever you say on your blog.  If you’re going to write a review of a product or tool, don’t be afraid to write something negative about it.  You don’t necessarily have to own every product to do a review, and most publishers will offer you a trial run of the product so that you can use it for yourself.  Just be honest and don’t just throw review after review to your readers.  You’ll only annoy them and they’ll just unsubscribe from your mailing list.
  • Selling Your Own Product: I believe selling your own product is great once you have establish a decent following and you’ve built your brand awareness online.  Selling a product doesn’t necessarily have to be a physical product like an ebook or software, although many are killing it by making there own product and submitting it to Clickbank.  You can basically sell your expertise by consulting, online course, etc.

Towards the end of the post, they mentioned that you Adsense does not work anymore.  Is it true. Yes and No.  You probably won’t make the same amount of money in Adsense like you would a few years ago, but it’s a good source of income for many blogs today.  Depending on ad placement and design, you can test out which placement converts better.  Many people like having their ads above the fold so their readers don’t have to scroll to click while others like to leave them at the bottom.  What worked for you?

That’s exactly it Jack! I am focusing on the first two at the moment as I build my credibility as a blogger and list builder. And then I will be looking into creating my own products. Where are you heading with making money from your blog?

Really focusing on building my list. Right now, I’m jhaving a hard time finding a great incentive to offer to my subscriber. I don’t want to give them another washed up ebook. Do you have any suggestions or resources for me to look at?

Yea, finding the right incentive is a tough one, because it has to be just right. I am working on a ecourse at the moment which I think is the best model for me, but what is a simple secret that you can share that a lot of people mightn’t know? I was reading the other day, that pretty much any blog post could be taken, extended and created into an ebook. So maybe look back at your best post?

I’ve tried Adsense on my hiking website with very little success.

On the other hand, I have two blogs for which I sell related ebooks I wrote. I think that’s a good way to go. And in both instances I created the product first, and then started the blog.

Hi John – Do you remember what your adsense placements were on your blog? have you tried other places to see if the conversion was higher?

I did move it around a bit, but I didn’t gather any hard data.

I do think placement really makes a difference, but we were still talking about peanuts, maybe $5 per month for 10,000 page views.

Placement is important, as well as ad type, size and color. Usually the 300 x 250 ad size works best.

I think mine was a longer strip, perhaps 150 or 125 by 400.

Read an interesting article awhile back about Adsense placement. If you’re promoting an affiliate product then having your ad before your post/above the fold isn’t a good idea, because it’s taking your readers off your blog.

Many people affiliate marketers like placing the ads after the post content for one main reason: If they’re not going to click or buy your affiliate product, then they’re going to leave your site anyways. You might as well try to get a few adsense clicks off someone leaving your site anyways. :)
