Google Trends For Websites – The Alexa Killer?

by Jack Nguyen

in The Web

Many of you might be familiar with Google Trends in the past from searching keywords and phrases.  But many of you might not know that you can use Google Trends for websites as well.  You simply type in your url in the search bar and it should give you traffic details like Alexa would.  Alexa doesn’t give you up to date traffic data on your website and I really believe Google Trends will dominate in the near future.

Like Alexa, if you type in your website and there is no traffic details available, that means that you have not reached the minimum threshold of traffic for Google Trends to start showing your site’s data.

To get a better sense of how Google Trends works, check out this post from the one and only Matt Cutts himself, and another great post on GT from Barry Schwarts on Search Engine Land.

Here’s an awesome video post that helps show your way around Google Trends:

Just for laughs, you can also visit this post on 10 Awesomely Strange Google Trends from Paul’s Pond site.  Here’s an excerpt from his post that i thought was pretty funny:

“In case you live in a cave, Google Trends is a tool that charts how often something is being searched for over a timeline, revealing any interesting spikes in its popularity. For instance, nobody searched for ‘Iphone‘ before 2006, then suddenly searching goes through the roof when the Spawn of Satan product was announced and then released.

On the other hand, people have been diligently searching for ‘funny babies‘ ever since the dawn of time… except for a period in 2004 when apparently nobody thought babies were funny.”
