The REAL Secret Of Growing Your Own Blog

Did you know the real secret to growing your blog is to focus on other blogs?  I was reading a post called The Secret to Growing Your Blog Following and the Pitfall You Must Avoid from Denise Wakeman that caught my interest.  If you have two blogs that were almost identical in content and features, the blogger reaching out to other bloggers will gain more traffic.  There are many ways you can reach out to the blogosphere that was mentioned in Denise’s post, such as finding blogs in your niche to start building relationships with, directory submissions, and smart comments.

Smart comments are comments that adds extra value to the original post content.  Simply writing “Nice blog” every time you comment is just a waste of your time.  Start writing smarter comments by sharing your knowledge of the topic of discussion instead of trying to sell something.  Here’s an excerpt from Denise’s post of the guidelines for commenting:

The guidelines for commenting are simple: use common sense and respect. There are no rules, but being courteous will help you establish positive relationships within the blogosphere. When you comment on a blog, follow the same etiquette that you’d follow in conversation at a cocktail party.

In other words, you’re not going to approach somebody at a cocktail party and say, “Hi, my name is Joe and you should buy my widget.” You would be a little more subtle. Listen and add to the conversation in a meaningful way. Talk with and get to know the other person first. Start establishing a relationship.

I have found that to be the key to the initial success of my blog. Building relationships with bloggers like yourself and not only commenting once, but becoming a regular commentator that adds value. I think that is why my blog has grown as it has!

It’s interesting that I keep coming across blogs that are talking about this. In fact, I just left a comment at buildthatsite.com about this very subject. I’m always amazed at the people who comment on our site that think that I am going to approve their comment with a link to their site that has nothing to do with what we do by saying “nice post.” However, there must be some value in it, or else I can’t imagine why people would be doing it so much. It’s hard to believe that they’re converting based on “nice post” and landing page alone.
