There are many things that we want to be great at in life. We sometimes wish that we were kids again, so that we could pick up the skills in our early childhood. Whether you wanted to be a better blogger, writer, singer, etc., it takes time to learn something and be great at it.
Only One Way To Be Great At Something
Many people think there are many ways to be great at something, but there’s only one way. I found this post written by Leo Babauta called The Only Way to Become Amazingly Great at Something. As simple as it may sound, Leo writes that by being great at something , you just have to start doing it….today. I love the fact that he says that we’ll suck at it in the beginning, which is true, but things get easier with experience. Here’s an excerpt that I liked the most:
“There’s no one who is great at his profession who hasn’t been doing it for at least 6 years — no designer, no programmer, no carpenter, no architect, no surgeon, no teacher, no musician, no artist … you get the point. I dare you to name one. Most have been doing it for over a decade, and are still looking to improve.
It takes desire, it takes drive, it takes lots and lots of doing.
So here’s the thing: don’t get discouraged if you’re just starting out. Have fun, like we all did in the beginning. If you have fun, you’ll learn to love it, and THAT’S when it clicks. When you love something, you’ll want to do it all the time, sometimes late at night and often, you’ll jump out of bed and want to do it before you move your morning bowels.”
There are no shortcuts to being great at something. You have to love it so much that you’ll want to do it every single day, and that’s the key to become amazingly great!

I was reading the book Outliers and in the book he shared something called “the 10,000 hour rule” and he basically stated that it takes about 10,000 hours to become an expert at something which I tend to agree with him on.
Have you heard of that theory?

It’s funny that you stated that because the post I mentioned talked about the 10K hours to becoming an expert at something. Will definitely check out that book! Thanks Chris!

Great point Roy! Overnight success is far from the truth, what these people don’t tell you is how much time and effort someone puts in to get where theyre at.
