Having pings to your site is great to notify you that someone has sent a pingback of your blog post. Here’s what made it easier for me to understand the difference between a ping and pingback:
- Pingbacks - Person A links up to Person B by adding a link to Person B’s post. A pingback will automatically send Person B a notification that Person A was cool enough to link up to their blog post.
- Pings – A Ping is the actual “notification” Person B gets when Person A linked up to one of their blog post.
The problem with pings is that when you reference an old post of yours in a current post, you’ll start to receive annoying pings from yourself in your comments area. NOt only does it look tacky seeing a bunch of pings from yourself, but it also clutters your comment area with unnecessary pingbacks to your self.
