Tet 2010, The Year Of The Tiger – How We Gamble During Tet

It’s That Time Of Year Again!

For many of my readers that haven’t figured it out yet, I’m Vietnamese and my last name is pronounced “Win”.  My last name is so common that it’s equivalent to the last name Smith.  Not sure how or why my parents came up with my first name, but that’s what it says on my birth certificate.

This year Tet falls on Valentine’s Day (Sunday, Feb. 14th).  Tet is the Vietnamese/Chinese Lunar New Year and it’s actually the year of the tiger.  We celebrate by getting together with friends and family, eat food, pass red envelopes, and gamble.

Although we can, when I say gamble it doesnt pertain to Texas Holdem, Black Jack, Pai Gow, Etc.  We gamble by playing this game called Bau Ca Tom Cua, or Lucky Chess in English.  There are different variations to the name depending on the images set on the paper.

This game is played with 3 dice and you start off by placing your wages on any of the 6 images on the paper.  When all bets are placed , the dealer would throw all 3 dice in a bowl and then place a plate on top for the lid.  You would then shake the bowl and lid a few times and open the lid to see which icons are faced up on the dice.  So let’s say the dice shows 2 shrimps and 1 crab.  Whoever placed $1 on the shrimp will get paid double ($2) and whoever placed $1 would get paid $1, the money that was placed on icons that didn’t hit is the dealer’s money.  It’s fun, easy to learn, and the whole family can get on the action!
