It’s that time of year again where everyone gets together for a nice holiday dinner party! We get to meet friends we haven’t seen in years and eat horrible pot luck food. Every year we decide to have everyone participate in a gift exchange, not a white elephant. Isn’t it the same thing? Nope. Our group had a gift exchange this year, yet there were some white elephant gifts mixed in as well. Some people thought gift exchanges and white elephants, so I decided to break some gift exchange knowledge for you folks.
Gift exchanges and white elephant are similar in various ways:
- Each person gets a gift for someone else in the group
- Everyone pulls a number to distinguish an order for choosing gifts
- Typically a gift can get stolen 3 times until it can no longer be stolen
Here’s what makes a white elephant gift exchange different:
- White elephant gifts can be a used item
- Generally these types of gift exchanges are intended as gag gifts
So if you’re the person organizing the gift exchange, make sure you set the rules early so everyone’s on the same page!
